World Record Attempt for Mandolin Pickers at Galax

Who knew you could hold a world record for simply showing up at the Old Fiddler’s Convention in Galax, VA?

These folks did! On August 7th they showed up in force mandolins a pickin’.

The previous record was 383 players in Bürgstadt, Germany in 2005. Tara Linhardt announced to the crowd that a total of 389 mandolin players participated in the four songs played. This exceeded the previous record by six players. The record is not in the books yet, Guinness has to review the results before it is official.

Congratulations! And, thank goodness those weren’t banjos.

Keep posted to their fb page to find out if Guiness gives them the nod.

In the Back 40

It’s always nice to see a new event succeed.

The Back Forty Memorial Day Bluegrass Festival just North of Curryville, MO was a hit. As festivals go this is easy to describe, great bands (as mentioned in a previous post), thoughtful (and improving) venue, beautiful warm weather, excellent director and emcees and sweet after-show pickin’.

Instead of pulling the trailer I started my trip by loading down the car to gills. I couldn’t even put the windows down without being in jeopardy of loosing something.

The path was treacherous. This is followed abruptly by a 35 mph sign… zing!

Curryville

Somewhere around here I started to hear banjos… paddle faster right?!

I got into the festival and Darrell Turnbull (owner / director / musician / all around good guy) got me situated and up went the display tent next to the New Outlook Bluegrass band from Ohio.

I met a lot of folks and had great conversations about guitars, mandolins, upright basses and even firearms!

I even got some shop work done. Here is a Murphy bridge I built during a Sierra Hull set.

Phil Bankester must have heard the excellent jam going on out in the lobby. He invited Nu-Blu back up on stage for a roof raising jam of Lost Indian.

Just when you think the night is over this young man grabs Cocozilla and throws down some hot licks. I have a feeling we'll be seeing more of this lad in the future.
