1949 Martin D-28 Finishing

The D-28 restoration is still ongoing. Recently we installed the purflings and bindings; see previous posts. Over the weekend the body was prepped for finishing. This prep included filling any cracks (and there were a lot), cleaning the top, sanding the entire body, resetting the neck and going back over for cracks, gaps and sanding up to 220. Here are a few photos. The first photo is the final scraping of the bindings. This step ensures that the bindings are uniform in color and the sanding of the dark wood and heated celluloid creates a muddy mask over the ivoroid design.

Scraping the bindings one last time.

Here is the body ready for its new barrage of nitrocellulose lacquer.

And finally, it has its tack coat and seven wet coats of lacquer. A severe thunderstorm moved in and brought the humidity up drastically during the last two coats. This caused the finish to cloud up. After curing, level sanding and buffing, it should look like a new, old, guitar.
